Cypritree - November 2024 Newsletter

Hi friends! Time flies so fast and I can’t believe October went by just like that. I managed to get one Inktober piece done just to keep up the spirit of it, since I’ve long given up the idea of producing one piece everyday of October. Nothing but ultra respect for all the artists who attempted it last month.
In this part of the world, daylight savings just passed and everybody got an extra hour this month. Whether you use it to catch up on sleep, grind out art, or just curl up with some comfort food, I think we could all use a little breather. Time’s feeling especially precious these days, as nights get longer and days feel a little heavier. It’s sometimes challenging to keep my spirit up with the incoming wintery days ahead but there’s always new games and shows to look forward to and more art that needs drawing. (That Monster Hunter Wilds Beta anyone???)
Speaking of time and effort—I want to talk about my latest competed piece: Messmer the Impaler, the poster child from the Elden Ring DLC. This piece took way longer than I anticipated, and if I’m being honest it was a real test of my patience— But, it’s probably my favourite print I made this year. It wasn’t easy (and honestly, it wasn’t always fun), but the result is something I’m really happy with. The snakes were both the most agonizing part and the part I’m most proud of. I haven't dropped this on socials yet so y'all are getting the real preview.

Featured Piece:

The boss fight with Messmer was visually stunning, and the difficulty not as brutal as Mr.PCR (for the record I fought him before the nerf). It took me about 3–4 hours to defeat him, and I had to find the same zen I channeled to finish the drawing. So yeah, Elden ring coming in to teach me about meditation in all sorts of ways.

Process:

The community on Twitter gave their input about the composition, and overwhelmingly voted for the one with the bigger snake. Drawing snakes isn't easy for me, so the result is something I feel very accomplished with. The print is in production now, and I am excited to see how it’s going to look. I’ve matched the foil and colour schemes with my previous print of Malenia, and I think they’ll look great together. Messmer prints will be going up in the store sometime in December!

Shop Update:

I’m running a Black Friday sale!! Buy 2 prints get 1 free! Similar to my convention-only special, but a little bit better because foils are fully included in the deal! Just use the discount code “friday2024” when you check out. Sale runs to the end of the month from Nov 15th - 30th, and it's a great chance to get some holiday shopping in and support your favourite artist (that’s me right?)

Artist Life:

I’ve been locked up in the studio focusing on some new work, and prepping for a semi solo-trip to Korea that has been a long time coming. I may travel frequently for conventions but this feels different and outside my comfort zone. I’m breaking out of routine and hoping to find some clarity on where to take myself and my work into 2025 and beyond. If you have any hot tips on the street food or cafe scene of Seoul, let me know!

Stay vigilant, stay safe,
Bo

Hi everyone! It's been a HOT summer and I'm trying to take advantage of as much outdoor time as possible. I've been undertaking a series of drawings on my back porch that's a bit of a departure from my usual dark fantasy/creature work. If you're on my discord, it should come as no surprise to you that all my gushing about the fine specimens from the gatcha game Love and Deepspace has finally forced my drawing hand. Yes, these 2D(3D?) men has me by the collar...🌶️ My creative process is a long...

Happy July, everyone. The grind is real before Anime Expo... which falls on July 3-6 this year. It's the biggest con of the year, so I always try to prepare as much as possible for it. I'm going to tease all the new items I have in this newsletter :) If you're going, come by to say hi and get a free Kiyo sticker! There's a lot happening recently, I am wishing all of you to stay safe and sound. Travel is part of my job but sometimes it feels a bit overwhelming. I remind myself that it's worth...

Hi newsletter friends! May was a pretty turbulent month for me, with some personal stuff happening and a reoccurring wrist injury that set me back a lot that I'm still dealing with. Really makes you realize to not take things you have for granted! On the positive side I've been productive artistically, completing some new Monster Hunter pins and exploring some new styles in my work. I was part of the may anime themed rotation at Mr. Surprise The Well, which I teased last time and now I'll...
